City Hall: Don’t fund DAPL. Divest from Wells Fargo!

image_(4).png

Seattle City Council just voted to divest $3 billion from Dakota Access Pipeline funder Wells Fargo. I fully support a proposal authored by Cm Alondra Cano and Cm Cam Gordon in December directing city staff to explore banking alternatives for the city by July.

But with the looming threat of increased state repression, and Trump’s executive order to resume construction, Minneapolis should take urgent steps in solidarity with the Water Protectors on the ground at Standing Rock.

At a minimum, City Council should pass an ordinance directing the City of Minneapolis to avoid future financial contracts with Wells Fargo and select an alternative banking institution that does not invest in DAPL or other fossil fuel projects.

Let’s follow Seattle’s lead in Minneapolis to #DefundDapl and make our city a center of resistance to Trump’s billionaire-backed agenda!

Finally, we’re seeing more people actually worth voting for! Too slowly, but it’s a big change from peak neoliberalism, when there was practically no political alternative in public discourse.

It is time to divest! The corporatists only understand money, so let’s take it away!

I grew up on the east bank of The Missouri River. My family has inhabited the area for generations. It is arguably one of the most beautiful views of the starry skies. The Missouri supplies the majority of SD with its drinking water. SD has a hard time protecting itself politically these days. As is true with ND. MN the people need your help! “Water IS life!”

I just left Wells Fargo and joined a credit union. If everybody who opposes WF did a little something, it would really send a message.
