Seattle City Council just voted to divest $3 billion from Dakota Access Pipeline funder Wells Fargo. I fully support a proposal authored by Cm Alondra Cano and Cm Cam Gordon in December directing city staff to explore banking alternatives for the city by July.
But with the looming threat of increased state repression, and Trump’s executive order to resume construction, Minneapolis should take urgent steps in solidarity with the Water Protectors on the ground at Standing Rock.
At a minimum, City Council should pass an ordinance directing the City of Minneapolis to avoid future financial contracts with Wells Fargo and select an alternative banking institution that does not invest in DAPL or other fossil fuel projects.
Let’s follow Seattle’s lead in Minneapolis to #DefundDapl and make our city a center of resistance to Trump’s billionaire-backed agenda!
